Mixtures and Discrete Factors

Objective Experiments for Mixtures and Discrete Factors
is a workshop for scientists, chemists, troubleshooters, and engineers who perform experiments with mixtures or with discrete factors. A mixture experiment differs from a standard process experiment because the mixture components must add to 100%. This requirement is called a "constraint." Standard designs do not work for constrained experiments – they require runs such as "100% of each component," or "0% of each component," which are physically impossible. Discrete factors are factors with no continuous levels, e.g. catalyst A or catalyst B – there is nothing in between. Standard designs often do not work well for constrained factor experiments.

All the math is done by software. We can teach using your favorite software, or we can assess your needs and recommend commercial software that is right for you.

Benefits of the Workshop

  • You will complete projects on time.
  • You will finish projects within your budget.
  • You will find the best product mixtures possible.
  • You will develop greater pride and confidence in your work.

In 2 days you will learn:

  • How to design and perform an experiment for mixtures
  • How to design and perform an experiment for discrete factors
  • How to design and perform an experiment for mixtures and process factors
  • How to design and perform an experiment for discrete and process factors
  • How to optimize your product or process
  • How to find the most important mixture components when experimenting on a tight budget
  • How and when to use different types of designs for efficient, cost-effective, yet sufficiently thorough experiments

This is What Happens During the Workshop:

  • You will work in teams of two, collecting realistic data from a hand calculator in four exercises. Each exercise provides practice of the methods learned. The hand calculators serve as substitute labs and factories.
  • You will learn to use the software during the workshop. You use the software to design experiments and analyze your data. This practice on real problems provides the confidence necessary to use the methods immediately upon returning to work.
  • Everything you learn is practiced during the workshop. Everything taught is demonstrated by real examples. Questions are encouraged. You won't have any homework.
